The worst meal ever

I hate to leave negative reviews but in this instance I was so disgusted I can't say anything else. My fiance and I popped into Tay Do for a bite to eat one night. I wish we'd picked a different restaurant instead. It was the worst meal we have ever had. Or not had... He discovered two hairs in his dish after just a few mouthfuls of his food. This obviously put him off... if hygiene standards were so low that he found that in the first two mouthfuls who knows what else might be wrong! He sent his dish back, we both nibbled at mine for a while. We didn't even get through half of it. The staff were very blase about him sending the dish back and didn't even apologise. In fact they seemed disgruntled with us as though we were trouble causers! We asked four times for water only for it to come with the bill. The bill was charging us for the dish we sent back too! They took this off but refused to give us any other discount even though we hardly touched my meal because we put off. They said they had knocked off the cost of our tap waters out of courtesy then walked off and waited for us to leave. Well that's nice! They didn't charge us for warm water from a tap that came with the bill when we'd asked from the start of our meal. The food was horrible. The staff were rude, and the fact that they seemed to care so little about our meal makes me wonder how unhygienic their kitchens must be. Is it standard practice for hairs (and who knows what else may be lurking!) to appear in their meals I wonder. They pack people in too tightly too. They tried to sit us almost in the doorway before agreeing to let us have a table at the back. The place seemed ver popular but I'm sure this is because of the convenient BYO policy and nothing else. It wasn't even that cheap when you think about it... the bill came to a tenner for a bit of prawn toast and my one veggie soup with no drinks. I'm local to the area but I certainly won't be returning. There are far nicer, cleaner(!) restaurants down this road and in the surrounding area.

We popped into Tay Do for a quick meal before a night out and it was pretty packed, everyone was squashed into tables that were too close together, I could only just about fit into my seat and it was pretty uncomfortable. It's so close that even the staff had trouble moving in between the tables even though they're all slim. We ordered vietnamese spring rolls and a soup noodle each with home-made lemonade. The lemonade was super-sweet, way too much sugar. The spring rolls were average, the filling wasn't so good. The soup noodles were lovely though, the stock was perfect - clear, oil-free, light and fragrant. I had the beef special with a mixture of raw and cooked meat pieces and it came with the traditional plate of bean sprouts, mint and lemon.During the meal, the service kept letting us down. When I was comfortably tucking into my noodles, one of the waitresses asked us to move, to which my reaction was to glare at her. I think she got the hint as she left us alone after that. When they were clearing the plates, she almost spilt my bowl of noodles on me. Her reaction was to laugh it off and she didn't even apologise! Needless to say, we left pretty sharpish without leaving a tip.

I really can't fault this place. I've been here many times- first for my girlfriends birthday, when there was a big crowd of us- Maybe fifteen or twenty. The thing that sealed it for me was that when the bill came, it was about £150- and we'd all eaten VERY well. They allow you to bring your own booze, which is handy, as it always annoys me when a restaurant is cheap, but sells tiny bottles of beer for something approaching four quid. The food is good, quick and fresh tasting. Lots of choice. Personally I'd avoid the frogslegs, but that's mostly because a/frogs are cute, and b/they taste just like bland chicken ;)They also do a lunch menu, which is excellent value. £4.20 last time I went in there- for a starter and a main. You can't really go wrong- that's not much more than a poncy sandwich. If I worked near there, I'd have a loyalty card!

I love this place! As one of the many bustling and vibrant Vietnamese establishments in Shoreditch, Tay Do has to compete for it's share of customers. It's a large and fast moving place, with a selection of small tables seating 6, and then one very long table that seats at least 30 people. At busy times it's likely that you'll be asked to share a table with strangers, but combined with the "Bring Your Own" policy it just adds to the atmosphere of the place. When you arrive, you'll be seated quickly by the attentive and businesslike staff, and asked for a drinks order. Then you can start to check out the delicious menu, full of meat and veggie options, ranging from familiar Chow Mein and Rice dishes, to Frog's Legs and soups.I highly recommend the lip smackingly good Pho Bo (rare beef soup) which comes in a huge bowl, full of tasty broth and noodles. This comes accompanied by a plate of raw chillies and beansprouts, to add into your dish. Also worth trying are the many fish dishes, and the delectable "Summer Rolls", chilled parcels of prawn, floss noodles, and cucumber. Delicious!Nip next door for some booze, and bear in mind that if there are lots of you, your orders might arrive fairly randomly, and just enjoy the low price and lovely grub!
