About

The Chalkface Homepage

One to one tuition in Maths for GCSE, A-level Maths and Further Maths as well as coaching for additional qualifications such as the AQA Further Maths Level 2, STEP papers and Graduate Numerical Reasoning. See TheChalkface.net for details and testimonials.

Dedicated one-to-one tuition

During your session you will have my full attention - the session is tailored around you and there will be no other students (unless you choose to bring them along - see group rate discounts). The key benefit of tuition compared to ordinary classroom teaching is that your misconceptions can be identified immediately, and as much time as necessary spent on explanation and examples. You are in control not only of the topics but the pace and the structure (some people like to make a plan and stick to it, others prefer the session to be tutor-driven - whatever works for you).

You get what you pay for

I have been tutoring now for over 10 years, and have been a full-time Maths teacher in a secondary school and sixth form for the last 4 years. The prices people charge for tuition varies considerably, and depending on your level of confidence you might be quite happy getting a bit of bargain tuition from, say, a university student with some subject specialist knowledge - that was me when I first began, after all! But if what you are looking for is not only a confidence in the subject but a thorough grasp of the process of learning, a wealth of experience right up to A-level and beyond, and the up-to-date knowledge of the curriculum, different exam boards and current teaching practices which only a teacher can bring, paying the premium may well be worth your while. Prices start from £25 per hour for GCSE or below, up to £35 per hour for Further Maths A-level or Oxbridge entrance exam preparation.

Proven track record

Whether I work with someone for years or they just travel up for a couple of hours' focused coaching for an imminent assessment, my clients feel that they are getting their money's worth. I provide additional resources to work on both during and after sessions, and any clients who need additional help outside the sessions are encouraged to email me their problems/questions so that they are not held back in their studying until the following week.

I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to work alongside determined, motivated individuals, and really appreciate the chance to help people tackle problems they thought were out of their reach and grasp concepts that previously seemed completely bewildering.

A wealth of resources

Whether or not you end up using my tutoring services, all my resources are made available on the web free of charge. This includes nearly 400 documents, teaching tools, spreadsheets and presentations, covering the whole spectrum of ages and abilities. For A-level Maths you will find my very own 'Not-Formula Books' - everything you need to know that the formula book won't tell you - for a number of the most popular A-level modules (see http://www.thechalkface.net/resources/notformulabooks/ ), as well as banks of hundreds of past papers, dedicated revision resources for different modules and dozens of thought-provoking tasks linked specifically to particular topics in the A-level syllabus.
Go to http://www.thechalkface.net/resources to browse my resources, or email me if you're looking for something specific.

Distance learning

Sometimes clients travel long distances, but that's not always possible or feasible. Instead, you can take advantage of the wonders of Skype, email and PayPal to conduct your tuition from afar. No travel fees for me or for you, so every hour you spend will be a useful one. While extra help by email is available for all my tutees, I find it is often particularly valuable for Skype clients because something is lost through the not-quite-face-to-face medium of web-chat. So rest assured, whether by email or live chat, tuition can still be invaluable.

Testimonials

"To be honest I never believed I could enjoy solving Maths problems. I usually kept as far away from maths as possible simply because I was never given the opportunity to understand how enjoyable and easy maths can be. After just a few lessons with Anthony I felt much more confident and resilient when it came to solving maths problems. Anthony simplified the problems I faced and provided me with a clear understanding pertaining to quick and easy methods applicable to solve maths problems I had difficulties with. The resources Anthony provided me to work on away from lessons were very helpful. Thanks to Anthony I passed my maths tests and got onto the graduate scheme of my dreams. K-Ching!"

Guv (Graduate Numerical Reasoning)

I travelled all the way up from London to see Anthony. Anthony is very supportive in any way he can help. I came up with a suitable plan that I knew would help me and he was more than happy to follow this. There wasn't a single question he couldn't answer. He also gave advice which should help me for any test I take in the future. If you live in London or a couple of hours distance from Anthony's location, I would defintely recommend travelling. Thanks.
