Cult British lager MORAVKA now on tap

Having reviewed this place in early 2008 and having returned several times since, I'm pleased to say that it still deserves its 4 star rating. Of news to beer fans is that the cult British lager MORAVKA by the Taddington Brewery in the Peak District now occupies a place proudly on the bar. This beverage is harder to find than horse feathers "up North" so most welcome in York. The Taddington Brewery is run by a long time resident of The Czech Republic that moved back to the UK and brought with him a wealth of brewing knowledge that he has put to good use - MORAVKA has been getting rave reviews from Beer Writers and imbibers alike and tastes nothing like the insipid cack brewed by the multiples over here such as Carling, Stella or Carlsberg. MORAVKA has been described as having "the firm bitterness that marks a true pilsner, with Zatec hops used in abundance for a perfectly balanced beer."Enough said really...

Pilgimage to York

My monthly (sometimes more often) pilgrimage to York starts and ends at the Maltings. Inevitably the end is a little more sedate than the begining! (I once fell asleep and woke with a note on my back 'I fall asleep in pubs' HaHa very funny!) This is one of the most perfect pubs in a city full of perfect pubs!

Inimitable refuge for great beer & atmosphere

Handily placed for York station and well known by visiting football fans and Royal Mail workers alike, this pub must also be a mecca for old enamel sign collectors. Everything from the proverbial Venereal Clinic to Washing Starch or Mustard finds its way onto those wonderfully evocative, decorative and naive early forms of advertising - all totally original, some rusting away but none of them the artificially aged faux products of some modern pub "designer".All this adds a strangely eclectic feel to this likeable mish-mash of a place with it's relatively locally famous avuncular landlord. Most importantly the real ale, cider and continental lagers are served impeccably and that's what it excels at - keeping drinkers happy. Large portions of comfort food makes sure this pub ticks all the relevant boxes for most of the visiting imbibers. After an evening in The Maltings it not uncommon to find yourself trying to leave by one of the various doors nailed to the ceiling...!!!
