About Us

Metanoia Institute is a well-established educational charity, specialising in the professional training of counsellors, psychotherapists, counselling psychologists, supervisors, coaches and organisational development consultants.
We were founded in the early 1980's and were among the first organisations in the UK to offer humanistically oriented professional training programmes. We offer part-time training on a modular basis leading to potential registration with BACP, UKCP, HPC and the BPS along with optional academic qualification at BA (Hons), MSc and Doctoral level, all validated by Middlesex University. Other post-qualification training includes Certificate and Diploma courses in Supervision and a thriving CPD programme.

Our Approach to Psychological Therapies

At Metanoia, all our approaches offer a broad basis from which to develop a personal style. We emphasise the importance of developing a sound therapeutic relationship that can support and challenge the client according to the context.

Psychotherapy outcome research and the experience of practitioners in the field suggest that no single psychotherapy or counselling approach is significantly more effective than any other approach, and all have something to offer the clinician. It is the nature of the problem, the personality of the client and the setting of the therapy that call for a particular approach. Increasingly clinicians are required to be flexible and responsive to the specific requirements of the context in which they work and to tailor the delivery of psychotherapy to the needs of a particular client within the particular context. In particular, according to the research, it is the quality of the therapeutic relationship that is key in determining the success of the therapy. All our trainings combine a focus on the therapeutic relationship with a sound and coherent theoretical basis that can be flexible and responsive to client needs.
