Best restaurant in Swindon

The Pear Tree at Purton (to give it its full name) is easily the best restaurant in Swindon. It was once a vicarage and the old stone building lends an air of class to the place. This is carried over into the service which was formal but friendly, a traditional feel but without the starch. We were led into a comfortable area to view the menu and relax while it was cooked. Drinks and small appetizers were served while we waited. When our food was ready we were led into the restaurant proper. Very elegant. The food was to die for. The menu changes regularly (you can download it from their web site) and is described as "modern English". I'm disappointed that my starter of pigeon breast on a bed of haggis is no longer on the menu, it was delicious, though maybe this is a blessing as I'll be able to sample something equally nice on my next visit. The food was well presented without being pretentious.Service was discreet but attentive, there was always someone who's eye I could catch without them hovering over the table. After three courses we opted to take our coffee back in the comfy area, a nice way to finish off the evening. An excellent place to take someone if you need to impress them but early booking recommended. There need be no arguments when it comes to splitting the bill as it is a fixed price menu. It was about £30 per head when we went, and worth every penny.
