Urban Fit & Fearless offers Krav Maga / Self defence classes that aim to equip the student as soon as possible to defend themselves against the most common situations they may face.
Techniques are drawn from a variety of fighting systems: Krav Maga: Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Traditional Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Boxing, Muay Thai, Vale Tudo and MMA. They are kept simple, functional and applicable to female self-defence, grappling (stand-up and on the ground), fighting/sparring techniques and weapons defences.
Urban Fit & Fearless head instructor, Patrice Bonnafoux, was first introduced to Krav Maga in 2001 while in the military. Over the years, he trained with various Krav Maga organisations and settled in 2007 for the system offered a more open and sensible approach to self defence: Urban Krav Maga. Patrice was certified as an instructor in the Urban Krav Maga system and with the British Combat Association in 2012.

I have now been going to Patrice's class at Urban Fit and Fearless for over two years, and I can say without a doubt that going there has become something I look forward to every week to the point of 'addiction'. I now understand the difference that a good instructor makes when it comes to getting someone like me (a fully uncoordinated, usual benchwarmer at school events, waste of space in all matters sports) to being fully committed to something and becoming actually GOOD at it - which was previously unthinkable. Coming here regularly has, after this time, completely altered the way I think about myself, others, the 'victim / compliant mentality' that many women carry with them, violence and the need to assert myself. I think this is the step that was probably missing before, that is now fully ingrained. At no point did I feel unsafe, bullied (some instructors can be quite abusive), fearful or pushed to something I didnt want to do; I have reached places in my own time at my own pace, and am now extremely thankful to Patrice, and a bit proud of myself that I got where I got I can't recommend enough

I come from a different perspective than others - complacency. I'd somehow always been confident in my ability to get rid of an attacker, but probably for the wrong reasons. I'm reasonably active/strong and not horribly coordinated, and was curious about krav maga so I joined this group as a pragmatic alternative to a traditional martial art. Well... Pragmatic it certainly is, but most importantly it's incredibly insightful. I got to experience credible pretend-attacks in class and realised I'd be nowhere with my instinctive reactions. Humbling. Patrice has been teaching me to re-program these reactions and I notice a massive difference in the effectiveness of my defence style. I have some way to go before I can face a strong opponent with unpredictable techniques but there's progress and it's surprisingly satisfying to see how much leverage you can (literally) have over a big guy if you make the right move at the right time. Again, profoundly insightful (and great fun).
