Welcome

At Wentworth House we try to make our guests stay as enjoyable as possible. We have been in the guest house for 10 years and have lived in the area for 25 years. Our local knowledge can help you make the most of your stay with us. Whether that is for some activity such as fishing, walking cycling or Art, or just visiting the many attractions.

About Us

“ A gem for chilling out" – one of the many reviews of Wentworth House. Once you have arrived at our B and B, you can relax, far from the maddening crowd, but on the doorstep of some great attractions. We offer more than a standard B and B, apart from being a historic building and being located central to some fabulous attractions, we have our own Art studio and Pottery that guests can make use of by arrangement. If you decide to stay, your hosts Mark and Ann (and Bertie our friendly Labrador) will ensure you have a warm welcome provide an informal atmosphere and will always be happy to help make your stay as enjoyable as possible. We are in the tranquil rural village of Aldbrough, near to the church, on the coast just east of Hull, between Hornsea and Withernsea. Aldbrough has a range of local services including 3 Pubs, two of which do really good food and are only a 5 minute walk. Our guests' value being able take stress free strolls along the often-deserted beach, which is just a mile away.

A variety of functions are catered for.

We have a public bar license, although we only open the bar for functions. We can cater up up to 100 people buffet style. Our large public ground floor rooms are ideal for small weddings and other functions. For most events guest will have the sole use of the property. For a truly unique experience guests can also make use of the pottery - a fun activity that everyone should try.

Pottery Workshop

In a separate annex we have a fully equipped pottery workshop and art studio. Visitors can experience the thrill of creating objects in clay. We will guide you though the whole process. If you live close enough we have regular weekly sessions to enable people to develop their skills. We also cater for parties, where you can paint a piece of pottery and take away a momento of your special day. Everyone should discover the exiting and rewarding this very anchient craft.

An Historic Building

Originally built in about 1620, Wentworth House was probably the house of Matthew Wentworth, who married the widow of Thomas Michelbourne (d. 1632), and later belonged to James Bean (d. 1767), a returned planter of Jamaica. Bean rebuilt or remodelled the house, which retains a mid 18th-century staircase and plaster work ceiling. He was a notable person and established a charity that provided two shillings a week for bread for the poor of the village, a charity that is now lost. The house, with a stuccoed façade, was altered and enlarged again in the 19th century.

At the turn of the 20th Century the house was owned by a member of the Sizer family, now a huge engineering company who invented the first cattle cake machine. During the Second World War the house was a red cross centre. In c.1970, it was taken over by an Evangelical charity (Summer Crusades) as a conference and retreat centre. The hotel owes much to the charity which did substantial landscaping and added the Spooner outbuildings, used at the time as a Chapel and now as the Pottery/Art Studio room.

Another makeover undertaken by Mrs & Mrs Northgraves who created the beautifully coordinated decor. This steady improvement has continued with Denise Whitmore and Roger Partridge installing double glazing and raised the Hotel to a commercial 4 diamond rated establishment. Over the past ten years Mark and Ann have made further improvements and much of the revenue generated from the Guest House goes towards renovations and maintenance.
