How to save money on print

As typically the most expensive part of a project, print costs can punch a serious hole in your marketing budget. Here are a few suggestions to making your jobs as print efficient was possible!1. Using the right kind of printer - Litho vs DigitalDepending on the number of pages, and the number of copies you want, you might be better printing with a Lithographic printer (larger runs) or a digital printer (smaller print runs). Set up costs are lower in digital printing, so if you're only looking for a couple of hundred copies of your brochure or poster, you might want to look there. There is normally a grey threshold area where it becomes cheaper to use litho... we often quote for both!2. Litho printing - making the most of your platesPrinting plates vary in size, so it's always worth checking if you have entirely filled the plates you're using. Print jobs like folders with pockets coming out of a flat layout will quite naturally have space for a few business cards, or a postcard. If you're editing a publication, find out if those extra four pages you wanted are going to require a new set of plates, just for them, maybe you could save that article for the next issue.3. Litho printing - using fewer coloursDo you need to have everything in full colour? If your staff handbook is for internal use only, would it matter if the text pages we're only black and white. Remember: each ink is a separate printing plate, i.e. more money, so if you reduce the number of inks, you can reduce your costs. Why not mix it up? Have a full colour cover, and black text pages... you can also use spot colour plates to liven it up.4. Running jobs togetherWrite a plan of all your print needs through the year. Are there any that you can print at the same time? Even if it means bringing the deadline forward or back on another job? 5. Paper pricesOne of the major cost components of your print job is paper. The paper merchants are putting costs up every 6 months or so. Check with your printer if you can pre-order your paper before the cost increases, even if your letterhead design isn't fully approved. 6. Stock managementStock management is hard. But doing two separate print runs in the same year of a job that you could have printed all at once will cost you a lot of money. Some of our clients have implemented more rigid criteria for brochure distribution, and carefully monitored stock depletion. You can do it too! As print efficient designers, Woolf Designs will always try to make your print more efficient. Call us today on 01603 861669 to find out more.
