Good potential, but experience was different, is customer always right?
We were given the pre theatre menu. we arrived about 645pm. we thought of asking for tha a la carte but as we had travelled for a few hours, we thought use the pre theatre and we would go back to hotel for rest. First thing I noticed rather un-customer friendly was the first waiter led us through a narrow gap through the restaurant to our table. the wider route will of course make us walk a few more steps. we were not too clear about ordering from the pre theatre menu since different restaurants operate differently. We eat out a lot so it's not that we didn't know how to order. my partner asked the waitress about what the food in the menu. The waitress explained to my partner and ordered the food for my partner, she took the menu away - i.e. she forgot to ask me what I wanted to eat. we thought this was indeed really strange. because the menu is two-course or three-course - that's why my partner queried her. however you see it, my partner's choice is two dishes: starter and main course. so how can this two-course be taken as for both of us? We decided to wait to see what happens. I should say we are culturally not too different from them so it was curious how things would develop from there. I was sitting facing away from the centre so I can't see what was going on but I seem to hear a pro-longed conversation between waitresses about our selection. 3 minutes later the same waitress came back and wanted to checked again my partner's food choice; at that point we said the order was only for one person and wondered why you left without asking me my choice. And that point she seemed to say sorry, and I said could I place my order. Food came fairly quickly (I guess that's why the pre theatre menu), though my starter - spring roll - was rubbery and seemed more starch and processed meat than what I expected of spring roll. If I made it myself it would have been 10 times better though won't match their presentation or pace! The main courses were good and quick, not brilliant, more like what we call "chop shui" than what you expect of Chinese Restaurant. But this is typical of UK Chinese restaurant, not just Yumla. Compare with China Town in New City Road. Yumla treated us in a very mechanical way, no attempt of showing interest to us. I noticed the waitresses did have some conversation with others along the same row (remember I can't see the rest of the restaurant). I certainly did not come to Yumla with my parent but the waitress managed to assume it that way - read between the line there and you see how desperate I was to finish eating, pay, leave. I won't discount them totally on this basis but I won't go back there that quickly. Thier a la carte menu might well be excellent, they do seem to have an interesting and promising selection (which is why we chose it in the first place). But being treated as I was having a meal with my parent (when my partner was not my parent) and the extremely clumsy waiter services make you think either that this is the service level in Glasgow or that yumla could afford such clumsiness (some places in London China Town do the same, but they are very efficient so any errors on their part will be solved very quickly, but at least not forgetting to ask the second person their choice!!) or yumla will soon yum on their own.

YUMLA took over from China Blossam 2005/6, a difficult act to follow performed with grace and elegance. As stated in the title of this review please see the review I have only just submitted under China Blossam, I couldn't find any reference to YUMLA a few days agoand just assumed it wasn't included in the Touchlocal Directory. Now YUMLA from c2005/6
Seemingly surounded by the results of the current wave of Chinese Buffet restaurants YUMLA is an island of elegancefor the discerning and dedicated Chinese Diner. The staff, all dressed in Cheong Sam, (a pleasure to the Ham Sap Chi among us) deal with your needs in a pleasant, cheerful manner. An extensive business lunch menu is available for those of us with little time to spare, however, ask for the a la carte menu if you wish to linger and enjoy Chinese Cuisine at it's, very nearly, best. Take your time, ponder, consult with "Madre d" and you'll be overwhelmed by the choice and quality of the food available. The restauant is open all afternoon so you don't have to throw the food down your neck to be out by 2pm. I will not, at this stage, go into the different choices available, I have not found a dish yet that I did not enjoy. Go along there next time you're in Glasgow, it's just off Argyl Street towards Ingram Street, and oft stated, discard the KF&S and get stuck in with chopsticks and rice bowl. Enjoy! JL Arran
