About

ABOUT

Staffordshire based Andy Edwards has been in the painting and decorating business all of his working life.

Andy established his own painting and decorating business in 1981. Andy is fully City and Guilds qualified, holds a diploma from the National Design Academy, and is also a Dulux Select Decorator. Andy is also Bona trained and a Bona registered contractor for Floor Restoration.

As you might expect, Andy is experienced in all aspects of the painting and decorating industry, and working on all types of projects both large and small. His work ranges from large MOD (Ministry of Defense) contracts to hand painting of bespoke kitchens and bedroom furniture.

During the last 20 years, Andy's work has been in the private sector, specialising in the more exclusive end of the market. During his years in the decorating industry, he has gathered together a team of associates (including plasterers, carpenters and loft conversion experts) on whom he can rely to to provide expert advice whenever needed. Andy has vetted all his associated tradespersons personally, and they can be relied upon to provide a first class service.

Modern interior painting and decorating involves many different types of textures and surface coatings. There is a vast array of products and finishes available to choose from, and classic, modern or period designs to suit all tastes. Andy Edwards is experienced in all types and styles of creative and imaginative painting and decorating.

Andy Edwards is committed to providing customers with the maximum level of care and attention, and uses only the highest quality materials to ensure high class interior work.

Andy has now expanded to include restoring floors.

By stripping away the layers of paint on a floor, the clean layer of wood is revealed which is then waxed to produce a natural-looking finish. Internal joinery can also be stripped to compliment the floor. Floor restoration has now become a major part of Andy's repertoire, and this new lease of life can be applied to floorboards, parquet flooring and all types of hard or soft wood floors.

Estimates can be provided over the telephone or via email as long as accurate measurements are provided. Pricing is costed per square metre, and the estimate given will include sanding, minor repairs (if necessary) and finishing with three varnish coats.

Andy is also able to visit your home/premises and provide a free, no obligation estimate (depending on distance), and can advise on what process would be required.

A range of floor sanding can also be provided. Sanding a floor involves stripping away layers of wood to reveal a clean surface which can then be made good and treated in a variety of ways.

A question often asked is “Can I use the room the same day?" The answer is yes, as Andy uses a water-based lacquer which dries within a few hours. It should be stressed, however, that he recommends a period of 24 hours is allowed for proper drying.

Gap Filling:

Customers often ask about filling gaps in flooring. Natural wood shrinkage can create gaps of up to 6mm in width, and on a ground or cellar floor, these gaps can be the source of constant draughts. Some gaps can be effectively treated with filler, but this is only truly workable if the gap is 3mm wide or less.

A second, and more effective way of treating gaps is to use strips of wood to the thickness of the floorboards hammered into gaps treated with wood glue. This creates a tight seal, and sanding the floor will sand the inserted strips down to floor level, leaving a smooth, draught-free result.

Gap treatment is only necessary on ground level or cellar floors. You will notice how much warmer the room is if any gaps that are present have been treated.

Sanding Process

Step 1: Fix any loose boards. Check for wires or pipes before fixing floorboards firmly with nails.
Step 2: Fill any gaps (if necessary).
Step 3: Floor is sanded several times, starting with coarse grade sandpaper and progressing through lesser grades, to finish with fine grade sandpaper.
Step 4: all edges are sanded using a sander.
Step 5: Lacquer is applied. 3 coats are used, with rubbing down carried out between each coat.
Step 6: Leave to dry (24 hours is recommended).

Staining Floorboards

Staining floorboards can bring warmth into a room, and looks particularly effective when combined with a neutral colour scheme. Once stained, the floor is lacquered.

Wood Brushing, Wood Restoration

This is a unique service whereby timber (wood floors, beams, etc.) can be brushed and aged to give a unique finish that has to bee seen to be appreciated. Andy is one of only a select few people that can offer this service on site. (Most timbers and floors are brushed during the production process at the factory)
