How I help

I work with people one to one on many different aspects thinking and mindset including their:
self esteem,
beliefs,
thinking styles,
coping strategies and
control over things.
I teach people to understand their thinking with a brief positive psychology course, tailored to their individual needs.

Self esteem

Self esteem is not the same as self confidence. Self confidence is what people show to the world, self esteem is based on their thoughts about themselves that are with them all the time, their inner voice.

This internal dialogue may be berating them for not getting something perfect? It may never be satisfied with successes and always find faults? It could be worried so much about failing they cannot see the point of trying?

People with low esteem in one area will also be socially anxious about that particular thing. Sometimes, when overthinking and anxiety creep in, low self esteem in one part of their life can cause people to doubt themselves in other areas, trapping them in a downward spiral or self doubt and anxiety.

I work on self esteem and not the social anxiety directly. It is like a see saw, when self esteem is high the the social anxiety disappears.

I show people not only the theory of how they can raise your self esteem, but give them pointers as to how they can put this in to practice in a personalised and supportive environment. I have been there, I know this works and everyone can do it.

Control
People can only control how you act and react. When anxiety and phobias take hold they lose the ability to control their reactions and then try to control their actions, environment and sometimes even the people around them. They think that avoiding things will help, but all it does is reduces their options and narrows their opportunities. What was once a comfort blanket is now smothering them.

I show people how they can take control of their thoughts and slowly they realise they can increasingly control their reactions. This new found confidence expands horizons and things change.

I also challenge people to look at whether they are showing too much control. I show them how they can begin to consider other perspectives and loosen that draining grip they have tried to keep hold of. When you feel you can cope with everything, only then do you have complete control over your actions and reactions.

Internal destiny
Many people believe that things are happening to them and that there destiny is based on external factors. I work with people to turn this around so they realise just how much control they have over their choices and make them more internal. I am continually focussing on what they can do - however small. This important to make people begin to understand the control they have over their anxiety and phobias. With training, practice and experience they understand that anxiety and phobias are not created externally but internally.

Perfectionism
Many people I work with are perfectionists with cruel inner voices driving them on. Their perfection is covering up an inability to cope with criticism or a personal high standard that is unobtainable. I teach people how to cope with failure and criticism. I will show them how to tame that tyrant in their head and thoughts. I challenge the black and white thinking of good or bad, success or failure and show them how to have a growth mindset. Things can be good enough, or failure can be viewed as "not yet" but I am not going to give up trying. Once they can control that inner voice they can truly live a life with no limits.

My work is based on the latest scientific evidence and years of personal experiences. It is tailored to individuals' needs and personalised with questions, tasks and homework that meet the client's current mindset and situation. The techniques I teach people are skills they will use for their entire life, permeating work, relationships and pleasure. I give them a strong psychological foundations that will make them stronger, happier and more resilient.

I work one to one with sufferers for 6-8 weeks to help them overcome anxiety and phobias.
