Avoid this place like the plague. Family trip 27th June in the afternoon. Poor service. Not only did they get the order wrong and hubby had to wait for his to be microwaved. I had chicken which was dry, rubbery and cold. I sent it back and the same piece of chicken came back reheated but still cold!! Salmonella heaven. I was advised this is how they serve the chicken and treated like I had never had chicken before. My son had a calzione which was freshly prepared but certainly a place to be avoided.

Passionless Italian

Considering the credit crunch and choice of other restaurants in Edinburgh, you might think that Bar Napoli would be keen to attract repeat business. It would seem not.Our group of 6 arrived at 10pm on a Saturday night. The restaurant was not particularly busy.We attempted to order a bottle of wine for the table but were told that it was not chilled. We ordered other drinks to give them time to chill the wine - unfortunately the two beers in this order were also warm. One girl wanted a straw for her drink - the waiter advised that they 'might have a straw left'. Oddly, five minutes after our drinks arrived, another waiter came to force straws upon the rest of us.We were seated at a long table near the door. As we were cold, I tried to ask a member of staff if we could move to warmer area. Three members of staff were standing around, when I finally got their attention, I was told with a sneer that a waiter would be with me shortly. Five minutes later I managed to grab a passing waiter and we were moved to a wobbly table at the back. Our food arrived and shortly after that we managed to get cutlery. The attitude of the staff seemed to be that they had better things to do than serve us. Once we had eaten our acceptable but unimpressive meals, we asked them to cancel the wine as it had still not appeared. A quick trip to the ladies room (5 cubicles, two with toilet roll, one of which with a door which would not close properly) and we paid, got our change and left, never to return again.Bad attitude, unimpressive food, none of the smiles and banter one would normally associate with an Italian restaurant.I would strongly advise going elsewhere - certainly, no-one from our group will be returning to this poor excuse for a restaurant.

Having sampled the 3 courses for £5, I'd rather go hungry. The deal itself does seem to draw in the punters, it's reasonably busy over the lunchtime period. However, the food itself leaves a lot to be desired.I started with Bruschetta. Not something I eat often but I like it when it's done well. I was presented with brick hard bread which was soggy in the middle where a little pile of freezing cold chopped tomato had been dumped. I had low expectations when paying 3 for £5 but Bar Napoli fell woefully short. On to Beef Cannelloni. The most interesting feature of this was the complete and utter lack of beef. I really had to search to find only a few tiny pieces of meat. This was practically all tomato sauce and very little else. When this was queried with the waiter I was told that it's all prepared in advance very quickly and some dishes end up with more of some ingredients than others and there was no way of knowing until you ate it. I was at least offered a replacement but it hardly seemed worth it.By this point the expectations for dessert were non-existent. I was presented with a single scoop of flavourless ice-cream and a small pool of raspberry sauce. The type you can buy a bottle of for 50p in Asda.Overall, a truly depressing experience. The food was practically inedible and even after complaining, I was offered little in the way of alternatives. A place I will definitely be avoiding in the future.

3 course lunch for £5

I often meet friends at this restaurant for a cheap and cheerful lunch. It's an unbelievable price and the food is alright too, I don't know how they manage it. The service is usually fun and charming too. Once I was too late for the lunch deal and the food from their main menu was really delicious.

This is the place to head after a night out and you need a pizza. Aways crowded, the pizza is great and the service is true Italian.Open late and close to George Street and they also do take aways. Highly recommended.
