Foam Mattresses These mattresses have no springs at all and are increasingly popular. Many foam mattresses are anti-allergenic and provide a very different feel than a sprung mattress. The type and quality of the foam used will determine the long term comfort and price of the mattress. The most popular combinations at the moment are a mix of reflex support foam topped by a generous layer of memory foam which moulds to the sleepers body shape. This provides the correct sleeping alignment and reduces pressure points. This type of mattress is widely used in hospitals and nursing homes but during the past five to ten years has become increasingly popular in the domestic market. Mattress Fillings Many Mattresses may use the same spring system but use a variety of filling materials which can significantly boost both comfort and price. It is not simply a questing of how many layers of filling a mattress has but also the type and quality of the filling material. Economical mattresses may use the materials such as lower grade foam or reclained cotton fibres in lieu of foam. Less expensive materials don't tend to last as long because they can break apart or foam lumps and pockets, thereby losing the ability to spring back. Relex Foam This foam is found in better quality mattresses. It is a very resilient filling that offers excellent support and readily returns to its shape retaining its comfort for far longer than its cheaper counterparts. Wool Layers Wool is often used in quality pocket sprung mattresses. Wool is a natural product which keeps you warm in the winter and cool in summer. Visco Elastic Foam Also know as memory foam. This was originally developed by Nasa for the seats used by astronauts during takeoff. Since then it has been widely used in hospitals and nursing homes. During recent years it has really "exploded" n the domestic market. Visco Elastic Foam is a man made heat sensitive material. The body temperature of the sleeper heats up the foam which then moulds itself around the sleeper's body contours. This offers the sleeper fantastic support, the correct sleeping alignment and disperses the sleeper's weight over a larger area reducing pressure points on the shoulders, back and hips. Visco Elastic Foam has been medically proven to help with numerous ailments including back and joint pain, arthritis, circulation problems and sciatica to name but a few. Many mattresses now contain a layer of Visco Elastic Foam. The quality and price will depend on how much foam has been used and also the density of the foam. The higher the density, the more responsive the foam is. Bed Bases: Many bed bases are constructed in the same way and offer the choice of either a hard top or a sprung base. A hard top base will give the mattress a slightly firmer feel whereas a sprung base will give your mattress a bouncier feel. A sprung base will also prolong the life of your mattress. Some manufacturers construct a sturdier more durable base by using superior materials and construction methods. Advice about purchasing a mattress If you are buying a bed for two, make sure both you and your partner are happy with the bed. Take off your coat or jacket and lie on the bed for at least ten minutes on your back and both sides. You will be more likely to decide if the mattress is the right choice for you. The mattress should support your body at every point and your spine should be parallel to the mattress. Ask a salesperson for advice. They should be able to explain the different spring systems and the benefits they might offer. Think about size. Go for as big a bed as you can. The more room you have, the more comfortable a night’s sleep you can expect. If you are short on space, it is worth paying a bit extra for a divan with storage. A good quality bed will last you for up to ten years and you can expect to spend thousands of hours in it. So it is worth spending as much as you can afford on a good quality bed. A good night’s sleep on a comfortable bed sets you up for the whole day. Don't buy a new mattress for an old base. You should buy a mattress and sprung base as a set. The two parts are engineered to work together. Using an old base will reduce a mattress's comfort and longevity. Newer mattresses are heavier than the mattresses of ten or fifteen years ago. You may need a new sprund base to support the increased weight. Newer mattresses are thicker now, so your old bed sheets may no longer fit.

SPRING UNITS The 3 main spring units in use today are Bonnell, Continuous Coil and Pocket. BONNELL: The Bonnell Spring Unit is the most common spring unit and consists of hour glass shaped springs, linked top and bottom by a spiral wire which runs across the finished unit. The unit will then usually have a retaining wire that is clipped around the perimeter of the mattress, top and bottom, called a rod edge. This provides the edge of the mattress with extra support. Economy beds may have a plastic as opposed to a metal rod edge and some have none at all. The thickness of the wire used in the construction of the springs is known as the wire gauge. The higher the gauge, the thinner the wire will be and therefore the softer the mattress will feel. Most Bonnell units use a 13 gauge wire. A few ortho models will use a 12 or 12.5 gauge as a thicker wire will make a firmer spring. A standard double mattress will usually contain approximately 288 Bonnell springs. The quality of the mattress will then be dependent on the gauge and the amount of filling used. As well as the quality of the cover, some divans have a double layer of springs which should give a much bouncier feel and be more durable over time. Continuous Coil: The Continuous Coil unit is constructed by one long piece of wire wound into coils along the length of the mattress. The coils are linked together with z-shaped wire along the mattress length, top and bottom. A Continuous Coil mattress usually has approximately twice the number of springs as a Bonnell spring mattress and is reported to be more durable, and maintain their shape longer than Bonnell Mattresses. The springs are linked along the length of the mattress as opposed to across the width so there is no transfer of weight across the mattress. The benefit is there is no rolling together if the sleepers are of different weight. The spring unit is used by many manufacturers but most famously by Silentnight. Their hippo and duck advertising is used to promote the "no roll together", i.e. when the hippo gets into bed, the duck does not roll into the middle of the mattress. Many manufacturers, again most famously Silentnight, place a higher concentration of these springs where the body needs most support. Quality will then vary according to the type and amount of filing used, together with the quality of the mattress cover. Both the Bonnell and Continuous Coil systems have springs that connect to each other at the top and bottom, affecting the spring immediately adjacent whenever they are compressed. Pocket Sprung The Pocket sprung Mattress consists of individual springs housed in separate fabric pockets. Unlike the Continuous Coil units, the springs are not linked to each other. They all respond individually to the shape of the sleeper's body offering excellent support and no roll together. The spring count is very important and can vary from approximately 800 springs per 5ft mattress to over 2000 springs per 5ft mattress. The more springs the better the support and the more durable the mattress will be. As with all mattresses, the fillings and cover are very important and will make a big difference to the durability, comfort and price.
