About

  • Part of the Northern Wing Chun Kung Fu Association
  • Traditional Wing Chun as taught by Ip Man

Part of the only Ip Chun Hong Kong recognised Wing Chun School in Yorkshire - The Northern Wing Chun Kung Fu Association.

Bridlington Wing Chun Kung Fu is now enjoying its 20th year providing training in Bridlington as part of the Northern Wing Chun Kung Fu Association, and is currently run by Sifu Matt Isaacs.

The Northern Wing Chun Kung Fu Association (http://www.purewingchun.co.uk/) was founded in 1991 by Sifu Colin Ward, who is one of only 13 students of Grandmaster Ip Chun; the eldest son of the late Grandmaster Ip Man and Chairman of the VTAA (Ving Tsun Athletic Association) in Hong Kong.

OUR INSTRUCTORS

Our classes remain at a modest size, providing personal supervision from our instructors, both of whom are qualified under The Northern Wing Chun Kung Fu Association, and have accompanied Sifu Colin Ward several times in his visits to the VTAA in Hong Kong, enabling them to train personally with Grandmaster Ip Chun and his students.

Sifu Matt Isaacs – Head Instructor of the club and a qualified Master of Wing Chun, Sifu Isaacs has been with the club from the very beginning, and is one of Sifu Colin Ward's most senior students.

Theo Cross – With more than 11 years' experience, Theo has earned a Black Sash and is a qualified Instructor of Wing Chun.

CLASSES

We aim to provide a safe, friendly and relaxed environment for our students to train - the practise of Wing Chun cultivates important self-defence skills, but it should also be a process that provides us with fun and entertainment, and gives us the chance to learn more about ourselves.

Classes are held at our new venue on the First floor of The Power House on Brett Street in Bridlington. The room has all the necessary equipment for training, including an in-house Mook Yan Jong (Wooden Dummy).

As well as our own classes, training with Bridlington Wing Chun Kung Fu will make you part of the Northern Wing Chun Kung Fu Association, giving you access to several grading opportunities per year, training weekends, seminars, chi sau gatherings, trips to Hong Kong (subject to extra fees) and one free training session per month at the NWCKFA headquarters in Leeds.

We run a 6-lesson Beginners Course that will introduce you to Wing Chun training and give you a full and rounded view of the Wing Chun system. The teaching method is very straightforward, and subjects are compartmentalised into easy-to-learn sections. Sheets are given at the end of each class, helping you to remember all that you've covered and therefore guaranteeing fast results.
Personal fitness is not an issue.
All that you will need to train is a T shirt, track suit bottoms and a pair of trainers. Failing that just some lose comfortable clothing.

Classes are on Tuesday evenings 7pm-9pm, class fees are £6 per session. Students must be over 16 years of age. Please contact us in advance to arrange your Beginners Course.
We are also considering opening a class on Thursday evenings; if you would like to attend, please contact us to show your interest.

All students must attend our 6 lesson beginner course, after which we accept and teach by invitation only. Students train with us because they want to, and not because they are tied in to contracts or given a hard sell.

ABOUT WING CHUN

What is Wing Chun? - A short video by Sifu Colin Ward
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gFykSb1edM#action=share

The basics of the Wing Chun system are – in very simple terms:

Conservation of energy (not dancing on the spot while you wait to see what happens, only use power when it is needed)

Minimum movement (deflection rather than total evasion)

Working on short range attacks (explosive energy), often described as ‘being able to fight in a telephone box'!

Straight line punches (this being the shortest route between you and your opponent)

Relaxation(enabling you to react faster with out the muscle mass which can slow you down

Kicking aimed mainly to the knee or a maximum of waist height (your waist height), such as a stopping kick. This is because head height kicks can often be telegraphed and why take your lowest weapon to be used against your highest target. In reverse, using this mentality would be like trying to punch the ankles

Complete use of both arms and adopting a square on stance (this is so you do not have a bad or preferred side during a fight). This is trained in ‘chi sau' (sticking hands) a GAME which is PLAYED throughout the system, allowing the students to feel for gaps, openings and weaknesses in your opponents defence. It is very important that you always remember that chi sau is a game, effectively allowing you to take a street situation and develop it within a game format

HISTORY OF WING CHUN

The style of Wing Chun is said to have been invented anything up to 300 years ago from the Siu Lam temple (during the Qing dynasty).
The Siu Lam temple was not only used for its religious purposes but also for hiding anti Qing revolutionaries (criminals) from the military.
Because of this and also due to a fear of the monks fighting skills, the Manchurians decided to react by using insiders to burn down the temple and kill all inside.
It was said that the five elders of the temple escaped (and are often written about in Chinese history as ‘the venerable five'), one of these was the Buddhist nun Ng Mui, a siu lam boxer.
Whilst on the border of Sichuan and Yunnan province she witnessed a fight between a snake and a crane and decided to bring this together with her own previous studies, to eventually create, a new, unnamed art.
Ng Mui eventually took onboard a student, a young girl by the name of Yim Wing Chun (Wing Chun, meaning beautiful springtime).
There is also a story that after training for some time the beautiful Yim Wing Chun was harassed by a local thug who wanted to marry her and would not leave her alone.
To put an end to this she challenged him to a fight and in no time at all after seeing him off, she had created her reputation as a fighter.
Later Yim Wing Chun married Leung Bok Chao and after learning his wives skills he decided to name the style ‘Wing Chun Keun' (Wing Chun fist) in her honour.
The Wing Chun system was then passed down through selected disciples until it reached Ip Man in Foshan, China. Ip Man decided to break tradition by teaching openly (but only to Chinese students), one of this students was a young man named Jun Fan (Bruce Lee).
Bruce Lee over later years brought Wing Chun into the eyes of the western world but for a long time it was not taught outside of the Chinese community.
Ip Man's eldest son Ip Chun decided to break tradition even further by openly allowing Westerners to learn Wing Chun.
At the present time there are only 13 people in the world qualified to represent his teachings and only 3 of those are Western.
Ip Chun himself, now approaching 95 years of age, still practices his Wing Chun daily and travels the world through his representatives teaching this most interesting, intriguing, and effective of styles.
