A great piece of art playing a vital role for nature.Bees play a vital role in enabling plants to set seed and fruit. By moving from one plant to another they transfer pollen, thus supporting the pollination process. The bee population is in decline, and without our bees we are facing a pollination crisis that will affect the whole world. By creating homes for our bees to live in, we will be helping them to survive and continue pollinating our flowers and fruits. There are some 200 species of solitary bees in the UK. They are called "solitary bees" because they lay their larvae in individual nest cells, unlike the bumble or honey bees that live collectively. Solitary bees love to use tunnels and holes in the ground as well as hollows in old plant stems and wood. The most common solitary bees are the leafcutter, mining and mason bees. The solitary bees will use the individual tunnels to lay their larvae in and will leave a block of pollen or circles of leaves that they have collected from nearby plants in each cell. Mason bees will then block up the tubes with mud. In the winter months you must make sure that the tubes stay dry and cold. It is the rain that can harm the larvae by dissolving the mud or rotting the wood. In April you should see young bees emerging to start the cycle all over again. If you are interested in these bee houses, or would like to purchase one, please visit our Products page or Contact us for any further information!
