My wife and I visited the recently opened Grant’s café ( formerly Panache ) in Okehampton as we not fans of the former café thought we would give it a try. After browsing the menu a waitress came to take our order and I asked her what the hogs spread consisted of in the sandwiches. She said “I’ve got no idea” and walked away from the table and no effort to come back with the answer. I decided to order the pie of the day from the blackboard. What I received was a smallish, dry meat pasty with mash on the side and a small bowl of watery gravy. I could have bought a similar pasty, if not better, from the bakers shop next door. Maybe I should have got a clue of what I would receive by the price, £6.95. After checking I had received the correct meal I queried why a pasty would be described as a pie and was told by an apologetic lady that she made a mistake and it’s really a pasty. I am amazed at this day and age, with the tough competition for customers in places to eat, that basic staff training and accurate food description is not treated as a must. You regularly get asked in the media to use and eat out at local businesses. But, it’s sad to say, we will not be going there again.
