Our job at Welsh Water is to look after the water industry in
Wales – for both today's customers and future generations. In recent years, we have experienced periods of drier than usual
weather conditions. We have increased our resources on
finding and fixing leakage from our pipes, and now have a team
of over 400 people working on this. As a result, our leakage
levels are the lowest they have ever been. If anyone does spot
a leak, we ask them to ring us and report it and we will fix it
as soon as we can. We rely on customers to play their part in
conserving water by using as much drinking water as they
need, but not to waste any.
Keeping water usage as low as possible not only means cutting
the risk of any restrictions on use, it is good for our rivers and
wider environment too.
As a result of investment of more than £3 billion over the last
15 years or so, Wales now has some of the highest quality rivers
and coastal water in the UK. Wales was awarded 41 Blue Flags
for Welsh beaches in 2011 – a very different story to back in
1995 when half of all the sewage collected by Welsh Water was
flushed into the sea without treatment and Wales had just two
Blue Flag beaches.
Most of our sewers are ‘combined' and take away surface water
run-off as well as wastewater from homes and businesses.
This can cause big problems during severe storms, which are
predicted to getting more frequent, particularly during summer
months. The long term answer is to keep clean surface water
out of sewers, and hold back storm water in natural ways so
that the sewer system can cope without causing flooding or
pollution. We are the leading water company in promoting more
sustainable drainage systems and are working to tackle this
issue in a joined up approach with all the agencies involved with
drainage and flood protection.
We are also working on plans to reduce our carbon footprint
by investing in innovative energy generation. Examples
include our new anaerobic digestion plants at our Cardiff and
Afan wastewater treatment works, which capture gas from
wastewater and turn it into sustainable energy. This reduces
our energy bill and also our carbon footprint, which we aim to
reduce by a quarter by 2015
