About Edward Gaut

Born in 1980 in the market town Grantham, Lincolnshire famous for Margaret Thatcher and Sir Issac Newton.

I was raised in the countryside and with few amenities at my disposal and at the age of 9 found woodwork a good avenue for my energy. I have been passionate about woodwork and from the first opportunity of holding one of my father's chisels that had belonged to my grandfather. I started making various house hold items and in no time at all had created coffee tables, stools and paper racks to mention a few.

Just 10 miles from my parents home lay the world renowned Newark and Sherwood School of Violin Making. I graduated after four years and passed with a Diploma and Merit for making and repair.

I started my career in western Canada at V.A.Hill Fine Strings and then went on to work at the prestigious Frederick Phelps in Kentish Town, London where I refined my making and restoration skills. In my time there I learned new repair techniques and refined existing ones. I developed a better understanding of varnish techniques in spirit and oil. A better understanding and importance of a finely tuned set up and the ability to achieve it. I was taught a new bow re-hairing technique that produces excellent results and has done me well with much re occurring custom.
While there the workshop decided to make a violin in our spare time, each of us taking a component. Working together in this way is very enjoyable and reminded me of college days.

In 2004 Edward Gaut Violins commenced operation and relocated to Bristol In 2006 where we have a good client base.

Edward restored my violin after I found it cracked across the body within its case. The violin is totally restored and has been brought to life again. We asked the Bristol violin shop for a quote for the same work but found Edward to be more competitive. He was also friendly and approachable which is not always the case in the music world, especially if you don't own a strad. I can't recommend his work highly enough and would use him without referring to others for quotes in the future. Overall, excellent workmanship, service and price. Highly recommended.
