I began learning music in my teens. There were no musicians in my family, but I wanted to learn to play the guitar. Initially, I worked out pop songs, riffs, melodies and chord progressions for myself from recordings. It wasn't until my early twenties that I felt compelled to understand music better and sought a music teacher.
I went through a few different teachers during this time, although amongst the most helpful teachers that I had was Gerard Cousins, from whom I learned about classical guitar technique. I also became interested in Jazz during a course of lessons with Claude Alexander. I learned a lot through self-study and reading books about technique, theory and harmony, as well as attending courses on composition with Jeremy Peyton-Jones.
Later, I took my ABRSM classical guitar grades, and promptly enrolled on the part-time bachelor of music programme at Goldsmiths University. Whilst studying, I was simultaneously building up my teaching profile and began working as a guitar tutor at Hogan Music, Newbury. I had a few band projects that I was part of too, including a jazz orchestra, and I also found the time to accompany friends and students in classical recitals at university.
In 2013 I became interested in the Kodály approach through studying musicianship with Selena Kay. Whilst studying with Selena I also enrolled on a part-time course with the British Kodály Academy to learn more thoroughly about good practices of teaching music. On the Kodály course, I took part in methodology classes with Holger Aston and took part in musicianship classes with Dr Árpád Tóth, and later David Vinden, with whom I will be continuing my musicianship studies in 2016/17.
