Angela Mandy Dip.C.Hyp/NLP formed Healthy Horizons in 1997 to provide effective help for all kinds of emotional problems including addictions, anxiety, confidence, stress, fears and phobias. She has qualifications in clinical hypnotherapy, NLP, Emotional Freedom Technique, counselling, yoga teaching and nutritional support for weight loss and works from comfortable and peaceful surroundings at her home based office in Maesbury Marsh near Oswestry.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a completely safe and natural process, that encourages deep relaxation and inner absorption. Whilst in this relaxed state, it is easier to bring about beneficial changes in the subconscious mind, the all-knowing and more intuitive part of the mind. By helping this part of the mind fully understand and accept the changes we want, we make it easy for the more critical, conscious part of the mind that is often causing the problem to accept the changes permanently.

Hypnosis is usually achieved through deep relaxation, or focussing on something to create a trance like state. Actually, there are probably many times in normal life, such as watching a film, reading a book, staring out of a train window or driving somewhere, only to find that you've arrived at your destination without remembering the journey, when it can feel as if you've been in a trance-like state.

Although the word ‘hypnosis' comes from the word ‘sleep', its actually nothing like being asleep. Contrary to popular films and stage shows, there's no big mystery: you are conscious, in control, can wake up at any time and most people are fully aware of what's happening and can remember everything. In fact our senses are often heightened as we become more aware of the workings of our own inner mind.

Actually, most people find the experience of hypnosis to be a very pleasant sensation, leaving them feeling relaxed and happy – like going on holiday but without suffering the inevitable airport queues!

Most people take between 1-6 sessions to achieve the results they want, and by using the techniques at home, including free self hypnosis CD's, you can get even faster – and longer lasting results.

Where relevant I often include EFT (emotional Freedom Technique) and/ or NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)

EFT

EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique is a simple, yet amazingly effective body/mind technique which is often called acupuncture without needles, as we tap on many of the same meridian points. There is a huge resource of information on the internet and the many successful results are well documented. However, nothing beats just having a go and trying it for yourself! It is easy to learn and can do no harm.

The simple tapping process helps to release emotional and physical responses and limiting beliefs that can so easily sabotage our success. It also helps to tranform past memories and reduce their impact.

EFT is used to help with:

EFT also goes hand in hand with other healing modalities such as life coaching, hypnotherapy, counselling, psychotherapy and all types of bodywork and energy work. Better still, you can easily learn to use on yourself to continue releasing emotional and physical issues to enhance your life.

Finally, EFT can be carried out over the phone or Skype, so if distance is a problem, there's still a way you help yourself to release those old, unwanted habits, thought patterns and beliefs.

Anxiety

What is anxiety?

If you wake up in the morning with a racing heart and debilitating feelings of panic for no reason, you know only too well what anxiety is. Most, if not all of us have experienced anxiety in some form, but many of us do not live with the constant pressure of anxiety that so many experience.

Anxiety of course, comes in many forms from a general feeling of unease to a full blown panic attack and can come from nowhere or be triggered by a specific event – or even just thinking about an event, such as an exam or being asked to be best man at a friend's wedding.

We probably all know the symptoms of anxiety which can include: a faster heart beat, shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness or just wanting to run away. It might even feel as if we are being chased by a rampaging tiger, but of course there is no tiger.

GAD is short for Generalised Anxiety Disorder and is said to affect 1 in 20 adults in the UK.

How can hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy can be very helpful for relieving the symptoms of anxiety. Hypnotherapy is often used to promote deep relaxation and can also help to dissolve any negative beliefs that have been built up. Learning to relax is really important and practising self hypnosis can be easily learned. Also, by learning these techniques for oneself, you will always have them at your disposal when the need arises and the habit of anxiety could gradually be replaced by the habit of relaxation!

What else can help?

NLP or neuro linguistic programming is a recognised element of hypnotherapy and it can help the anxious person put things into perspective

EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique is an amazingly simple tool that you can learn very easily. Tapping on specific acupressure points, the anxious person can find their anxiety diminishes very quickly.

Mindfulness: this is a valuable tool of bringing our focus to the present moment. Often the anxiety stems from stress that happened in the past or overthinking about the future. The present moment is actually often a safe and comfortable place to be. Even if there are problems currently happening such as sitting in an aeroplane which is increasing the sense of panic, mindfulness can help with accepting that emotion, recognising it for what it really is, accepting it will pass and anxiety itself will not kill you – and actually is likely to make things worse.

Again, learning to relax is the most valuable skill, which can be learned very easily – but does require regular practise to make an effect.

CBT or cognitive behavioural counselling can help by gradually encouraging the anxiuos person to recognise and confront their fears, one small step at a time.

Weight Management

As most people now know, diets don't work in the long term because they put the body systems into ‘starvation mode' which slows down the metabolism as the body thinks it has to conserve energy.

Also, traditional diets don't deal with the effect of the mind. As you've probably discovered, as soon as you try not to think of something – it becomes even more important to think about it! Therefore, as soon as we think of all the foods we now tell ourselves we cannot have – we simply want them even more!

But who wants to live a life focussed on counting calories, restrictions and denial anyway? Wouldn't it be better to change your relationship with food, so it becomes a natural part of life, like bathing or sleeping?

How hypnotherapy can help with weight loss:

It can help you discover the reasons for the weight gain. This could include: comfort eating, large portion sizes, lack of effective planning, or old, outdated habits of unhealthy eating.
It can help change eating habits: encouraging you to eat smaller portions and perhaps eat more regularly to keep blood sugar levels topped up.
It can help you reconnect to natural feelings of hunger and fullness or satiety: Often these feelings have been over-ridden so many times that they need to be to relearned.
It can help eliminate emotional eating and change core beliefs around food: looking at why, not just what and how much, you eat. Emotional eating patterns are often set up in childhood and just keep triggering the same eating habits. Only by changing these original core beliefs can we really hope to achieve lasting change. Hypnotherapy and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) can change these triggers, permanently.
It can help reduce cravings: again, a combination of hypnotherapy and EFT can reduce or eliminate cravings completely.

Yoga

Yoga can help us move more easily, breathe more fully and relax more completely. I practise and teach a gentle flowing style of hatha yoga that is gentle, therapeutic and hopefully fun! I currently teach a class at the Venue, Park Hall, near Oswestry on Monday evenings from 7.30pm – 8.30pm. Free for members or £5 for non-members.
