About Us

South Caernarfon Creameries is one of Wales' leading farmer owned dairy co-operatives which now has around 125 member farmers. The co-operative was established in 1938 and today manufactures 6,500 tonnes of cheese and processes another 12 million litres of milk through the dairy each year. In total, we process 80 million litres of milk each year which is sourced from our member farmers who are located from North Wales into Mid Wales. We supply a range of high quality dairy products including cheese, milk, salted Welsh butter, cream and buttermilk to a variety of customers; from smaller independent grocers, to large supermarkets and food service companies - you can even buy direct from our on-line shop! Our cheese range is packed into retail packs, large deli blocks or can be bought in bulk and includes, our special reserve deli brand, Old Shire. The dairy range is also packed into retail style packaging and we were amongst the first companies to pack milk in bags in the UK. Quality is key, from the raw ingredient to the end product, which is reflected in numerous awards that we've won. We have also been recognised many times at the True Taste of Wales awards. Cheese

We have a long tradition of making cheese and have been doing so since 1959. We now produce around 6,500 tonnes of cheese each year which uses over 65 million litres of milk! We're still very much traditionalists, hand salting the cheese on open tables. Not only does this produce an exceptional product, but enables us to have much greater flexibility than some of the modern creameries around the world. Take a look at our tour of How its Made. We have an extensive Cheese Range. There's mild to vintage Cheddar, Double Gloucester, Red Leicester and Wales' best known territorial cheese, Welsh Caerphilly. And if you need convenience, we can supply grated cheese in 220g(retail), 1kg, 2kg and 5kg packs. We produce both branded and own label cheese and have contracts to supply several of the major supermarkets with their own label cheese. Our traditional cheese-making methods coupled with our locally sourced milk make our range both unique and of superior quality.

Dairy and Butter

We're experts in bottling milk; we've been doing it for years. Our versatile dairy manufactures a range of products for retail and bulk delivery. We were also one of the first companies in the UK to pack milk in bags, which has had a beneficial impact on packaging waste reduction. In 2010 the company invested in a traditional butter churn to make authentic Salted Welsh butter which has a higher salt content than butter from other regions. We supply this butter as bulk, in retail own label packs for some of the supermarket chains, but mainly we sell it under the growing Welsh Dragon range. Our milk has been consistently recognised as higher quality than the national average, which has been proved time and again with our many awards. South Caernarfon Creameries delivers a wide range of our own dairy products and other products to the local area via our franchisees. These find their way to the doorsteps of over 4000 homes within North West Wales and ensure that our local customers have fresh daily deliveries of locally produced dairy products.

Our Farmers

South Caernarfon Creameries is a farmer owned co-operative, so all of our member farmers who supply us with their milk also own a share in the company. Our milk has been recognised as consistently of higher quality than the national average; it's higher in fat and protein and lower in cell counts. Our numerous awards just prove this further. What's more, the average herd size is smaller than the national average. Our member farmers' 'milk field' goes way beyond the local area of the Llŷn Peninsula and Eifionydd and includes North and mid Wales. To maintain quality, our member farmers are audited regularly in line with the requirements for the Red Tractor Scheme and our own, internal quality standards.
