The Northern College for residential adult education, located at Wentworth Castle, Stainborough, set in its own magnificent buildings and grounds is unique in the north of England and one of the most envied locations in South Yorkshire. It is dedicated to the education and training of men and women who are without formal qualifications and are seeking to return to learning.

The College has pioneered an innovative mix of full and part-time programmes of study which offer accredited pathways starting from basic literacy and numeracy through to higher education, which also enable it to contribute to social and economic regeneration through education and training in the community and workplace.

The College is committed to equal opportunities for all, and offers an admirable learning environment in a residential setting, with a high level of support which enables students to make maximum use of their time and the facilities available. Men and women of all ages from 21 to 70, often with families and dependents, some single parents accompanied by young or school-age children. For these, the Colleges Childrens Centre provides a vital, free day-care and after school service, which enables student to study, while their children learn in a safe, happy environment.

Its thirty-eight acres of grounds and gardens are of outstanding botanical environmental interest. The gardens contain the national collection of many varieties of rhododendron, camellia, magnolia and other Asiatic flowering plants as well as native European species.
