As a qualified, experienced teacher I offer individual tuition to children and adults of all levels. My air-conditioned music studio is a perfect environment for quiet, individual learning.
Classically trained I learnt to play from an early age, attended Music College before launching a musical career as an orchestral player, teacher, peripatetic tutor and chamber music performer.
My wealth of musical experience in the UK and abroad includes professional engagements performing on the London concert stage, conducting exams for a leading examination organisation, playing and tutoring in schools, coaching orchestral players and building a successful private teaching practise. Amongst my students are those learning to play for pleasure, gaining immense satisfaction from their exploration of the musical world and numerous individuals who have made music their career choice.
Learning to play an instrument opens a world of possibilities. I was fortunate to be introduced to music in my formative years and continued my classical training through school and college. After studying with some of the leading musicians in the UK my music teaching began whilst I was building a career as a performer, in my twenties. Since then I have taught groups and individuals, coached and examined at all levels. I worked for Essex County as a peripatetic and have taken music into schools as a chamber music performer.
I always recommend weekly lessons of 20-40 minutes duration, dependant upon standard, age and ability.
Every lesson is designed to be interesting and informative with clear goals set at each stage. Regular home practice is encouraged to help students achieve weekly improvement as they gain in confidence.
Lessons are structured from week one, an introduction to reading music, playing those first notes, right through ABRSM exams to diploma level if that is the route students wish to take. To support this system Theory, Aural, Sight Reading and performance skills are also included. Playing for pleasure is also an achievable goal
A typical lesson would include a warm-up, technical exercises, performances of pieces studied, duets, games/quizzes, introduction to new pieces with detailed instruction on how to proceed to learn these new works, incorporating new skills. To finish - a thorough recap of the lesson and aims for the next lesson.
