Pizza Express was the gold standard of the pizza world. However, it is going downhill with pizzas burnt at the edges, salads getting smaller and a general cutting of corners. The one in Henley has a pleasant ambience and that is something that still characterises the chain - interesting buildings, good decor and each one has some individuality. Service in this one has been uniformly Eastern European for some while now, but it is generally helpful, cheerful and polite. I was grateful to the waitress on our last visit who kindly pointed out that I was giving her a tip that exceeded the cost of the meal, easily done with these hand-held gizzmos where you have to put in the amount. I expect we'll keep going but standards are slipping.

Which kind of says it all really. The building is a lovely quaint old thing with seating for plenty. Dark wood and paint goes some way to creating a romantic Italian atmosphere except for the fact that the place is so echoey that you have to shout to make yourself heard. They also have a very small outside terrace (next to the pay and display car-park) with a couple of tables for the smokers. The menu is totally as per every other Pizza Express on the planet. The service though, if last night's meal is anything to go by, is shockingly slow. The staff are all friendly and helpful but half an hour to clear the plates when there were only three tables occupied? Sorry, that's totally unacceptable. Again, with so few customers, I don't see the need to have cooked our Pizzas so early - and then kept them warm so that they turned to blackened frisbees. Bill for four (one of whom was seven and having the kiddies £5.75 all inclusive) was seventy quid. Hmmmmmmm.
