Our team of engineers have the level of experience, along with an in-depth knowledge of relevant British Standards, to allow them to be able to recognise structural flaws in buildings at first glance.

All of our calculations drawings and reports are overseen by a chartered structural engineer, and we undertake rigorous quality control procedures to ensure that no structural defect goes unnoticed.

Structural Calculations

PorthouseDean provide structural calculations suitable for building regulations submissions which are compliant with British Standards for beams, columns, frames and trusses amongst other types of structure, and for all types of construction materials. We deal with local authority building control the length and breadth of the country providing a clear, transparent, competitive and effective structural engineering consultancy service.

PorthouseDean Limited are capable of the analysis and design of a broad variety of structures, such as steel frame, timber frame, traditional brick & block, steel portals, retaining structures, basements, foundations and others. Our calculations are covered by professional indemnity insurance and are overseen by an engineer accredited by the Institution of Structural Engineers (IstructE).

Structural design calculations are essential when a building is to have large open areas, large windows and few walls. This means that what you want to achieve aesthetically can usually be achieved with a bit of hard work, however this is typically reflected in the design fees for the project.

Structural calculations are not always required and often people prefer to reduce the amount of money that they spend on design calculations, however it may save money in construction to have additional calculations and details produced. This is known as Value Engineering.

Structural Surveys

PorthouseDean Limited offer a comprehensive structural survey service so that you can have peace of mind. Whether you are buying a new property, or simply investigating defects in your existing property, we have a service tailored to your needs.

PorthouseDean offer two types of service including limited defect surveys and full structural surveys. The price of a full structural survey is dependent upon the size of the property, whereas the cost of a limited defect survey is usually consistent (as the survey is limited to only one defect).

Site Investigations

PorthouseDean Limited offer environmental engineering consultancy to ensure that your site is compliant with environmental regulations prior to construction. The process that we go through to achieve this generally takes place in two stages, Phase 1 and Phase 2.

The phase 1 report involves the preliminary appraisal of the site for the purposes of establishing the requirements for testing in the phase 2 investigation. This is done by collating publicly available historical and environmental site data which gives an indication of factors such as whether the site is at risk of radon gas exposure and coal or brine mining subsidence, whether there is a risk of contamination of ground-water due to leaching of contaminants from the site and any other potentially harmful pollutant linkages. It also provides an insight into historical site usage and potential sources of contamination both on and off-site.

The phase two report draws information from a variety of testing procedures including laboratory testing of soil samples, water samples and leachates obtained from site. It usually also involves data from the excavation of trial pits or boreholes in order to establish ground conditions and make recommendations on foundation type. The report, dependent upon the level of site contamination, will also make suitable site remediation proposals.

Method Statements

Temporary works are required in order to enable structural work – particularly but not limited to that involving modifications to existing structures. This may be to provide stability during removal and replacement of a structural column or beam, or it may be to provide stability to non-retained and unstable excavations or slopes.

PorthouseDean can provide construction method statements which provide step-by-step guidance on how to proceed with work affecting structural elements in order to ensure that the structure is safe. We can also provide risk assessments and general guidance on how to achieve structural safety.
