Friendly local pub - Visit now!

As reviewed on Fancyapint.com on 27/02/09 - At the top of the hill in New Quay, away from the hurly-burly of the beach and harbour sits a fine pub that's well and truly of the old school - the Sea Horse Inn. A small, one-roomed pub with a tiny corner bar, the Sea Horse Inn is a proper locals' place, where conversation, the odd tipple, racing on the telly and friendly banter are the order of the day. There's a smallish range of drink (the bar is tiny) but the Brain's St. David's ale on the single hand pump was jolly nice and there's plenty of other bottled stuff to choose from. We were sorely tempted by the crusty filled rolls on the bar (another rarity in pubs nowadays), but we'd only recently eaten and simply didn't have the capacity, which was a pity. The décor has not changed much over the years - exposed stonework, fake beams, upholstered banquettes etc - but it's well looked after and fresh flowers were put out whilst we were there. Of course, because it's New Quay, there's a Dylan Thomas connection - the Sea Horse was known as the Sailor's Home Arms - providing the name for Sailor's Arms in Under Milk Wood. The locals are friendly - as are their pets - and conversation starts at the slightest provocation. And, if you're in a sporting frame of mind, you might even be challenged to a game of pool. The Sea Horse Inn is a fine example of a fast-disappearing breed, a true local, that's a gathering place for people round about, yet welcomes outsiders and hasn't felt the need to modernise to keep up with (appropriately for these ) the Jones's. If you've a pub like The Sea Horse near you, treasure it.Also - New Quay Beer festival - Runs for approx 2 weeks until August Bank Holiday Monday.
