Permanent Solutions to Scour

Seabed Scour Control Systems Limited (SSCS) was established in 1984 to provide Frond Scour Protection Systems and Services to the Offshore Subsea Oil and Gas Industry.

Following an intensive period of product development and on site trials by SSCS and major Offshore Oil and Gas companies (see attached approval letter from Shell UK), the SSCS Frond Systems were first put to commercial use at new and existing oil and gas development sites in 1986.

The SSCS Frond Mats reduce current velocity and related turbulence in the location they are installed eliminating the conditions which create scour resulting in immediate and permanent protection.

The reduction in current velocity stabilises the seabed and prevents scour occurring. Sediments being transported by the current are captured by the Fronds, and deposited within the Mat.

Immediate scour protection is combined with the build-up of a fibre reinforced, compacted sediment sandbank throughout the fronded area providing strengthened stability. The Frond Mats eliminate the occurrence of scour immediately upon installation and provide permanent maintenance-free protection.

The Frond Mats are not susceptible to edge scour that occurs with other methods, and as a result of the natural tidal motion of the viscous drag created by the buoyant fronds, the protection extends beyond the extremities of the base of the Frond Mat. As a result the Mats protect a greater area of the seabed than is provided by other methods.

Environmentally Acceptable

The SSCS Frond Mats have been accepted as being environmentally acceptable and compatible with the marine habitat.

“Environmentally acceptable - the sandbank contours follow and blend into the river or seabed, and does not affect marine life or vegetable growth or fishing."

The Fleetwood Fish Producers Organisation Limited has also stated that The SSCS Fronded solutions to scour are “the only technique we are able to endorse as being compatible both with the fishing fraternity and the environmental lobby".

From the recent SASMAP project that is running from 2013 – 2015 the below results were found during a 2013 survey:

“where there was no surrounding seagrass or vegetation in the area, was that they (the Frond Mats) were a haven for various fish and fish fry and it certainly appeared that the mats were acting either as a nursery or an area of protection for these fish."

“Examining the plastic remains also revealed some interesting new information. After the initial investigations the plastic polymethyl methacrylate appears to have undergone no degradation, which would make it very suitable for protective materials."

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food (MAFF) – now part of DEFRA – provided their endorsement of the SSCS Frond Mats stating:

“...with your product the natural acceptance is accelerated thereby making it environmentally accepted. This, plus it being completely passive, means that we, as an organisation, endorse your product."

“...your company has a product that would satisfy our environmental demands..."

Field Proven

The effectiveness of the Frond Mats has been endorsed by Krystian W. Pilarczyk of the Hydraulic Engineering Division of Rijkswaterstaat in Delft and Ryszard B. Zeidler of the Institute of Hydro-Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences:

“Based on the artificial seaweed concept of ‘arrested sedimentation', SSCS system (mat) suffers none of the drawbacks of similar previous systems. It has superb positional stability, it is not prone to phytoplankton colonisation, it requires no special tools or skills for installation and it actually serves to enhance its own effectiveness and that of other conventional sea defence forms"

“In conjunction with this action, at relatively shallow water the fronds also interfere with wave-induced orbital forces, effectively causing waves to break early and thus reducing the impact on threatened shorelines, breakwaters, etc."

Survey Findings & Testimonials

Shell

“we would have no hesitation in commending it to any interested parties in the Shell Group of companies or to any of your prospective clients" (UK)

“The Scour Correction mat appeared to have arrested the scouring on the CRPJ-01 side of the freespan..." (Brunei)

Arklow Bank – GE Energy; from the 2011 Completion Report compiled by Island Maritime Ltd

“Initial observations of the effect of ... Frond Mattress installation are positive."

“Immediate observations of the effects of Frond Mattresses around WTG 4 & WTG 5 are very positive"

SASMAP

“Six days later a first monitoring was carried out, by diving the site again. This revealed that the fronds had already caught a lot of sand." (Netherlands)

“After a month the location was monitored again using multibeam sonar. This confirmed our first impressions that not only had the mats themselves trapped sediment, but behind the mats there was also sedimentation" (Netherlands)

“the weighted edges worked very well. Even in the rough tidal conditions the mats remained in their place." (Denmark)

SSCS Lifting Slings

SSCS are specialist manufactures of Lifting Slings. Made to order in the UK.

We have been manufacturing and supplying lifting slings, also referred to as lifting strops, to multiple industries with exceptional success for over 20 years. Our slings all conform to current EN standards and are delivered complete with printed declarations of conformity. All of our polyester webbing and round slings are complete with a visible label detailing the serial number, date of manufacture, safe working load limits and specifications of the sling.

As full members of the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) we ensure all our lifting equipment is of the highest standard. We can custom make polyester web slings with a fast turn around time, our standard slings are duplex (double ply) slings for added safety but we can manufacture simplex (single ply) web slings to BS EN-1492:2000, flat belt slings and single-use disposable cargo webbing slings to suit almost any application.

Features
• Meets the performance requirements of EN 1492 Part 1:2000.
• Minimum breaking load is 7 times the W.L.L.
• Manufactured from 100% high tenacity polyester material.
• Available in simplex, duplex or endless type.
• W.L.L from 1 tonne to 800 tonnes available.
• Can be produced to almost any length.
• Multi leg slings can be produced to order.
• Wear sleeves and reinforced eyes are available to suit all capacities and lengths.
• Marked with size, manufacturers mark and ID mark.
• A soft alternative to wires and chain.
• Individual certification for each sling can be supplied

Guide To Lifting Slings Lifting heavy goods that could be damaged using heavy rough chain or wire rope slings? This is no longer a problem, polyester lifting slings were developed to lift objects where surface damage would be unacceptable such as a mega yacht or objects with newly painted surfaces, the soft polyester reduces friction and damage to surfaces ensuring goods remain in tip top condition when being transported. Another main advantage of soft slings over chains and wire rope is the huge reduction in the actual weight of the sling.

Polyester webbing slings can be purchased as a standard sling with an eye each end or they can be customised to your specifications, all our slings are webbed in the UK.
Polyester slings can be used in a number of different ways, such as choking or to create a basket, please note that these can alter the safe working load of the slings depending upon which method you use for lifting, all of our polyester slings include tags that show all working load limits of the slings for safety purposes.

Bespoke Slings As we manufacture many of our slings in the UK we are able to offer bespoke manufactured slings to your exact requirements in small and large volumes.

Range SSCS provide a wide range of Webbing and Round Slings from WLL 1 tonne to 20 tonne as standard, with special slings being manufactured up to WLL 100 tonne.
Specially designed and much larger capacity Round slings up to WLL 800 tonne can be produced upon request.

If you don't know what is best suited to you, please ring us on 01493 443380 and our team who have a vast experience with these products can help you come to a decision.
