Building Surge Protection Devices - TYPE 1/2/3 SPDS

Providing the very best in SPDs for your building needs, whether it would be Hospitals, Airports, Stadiums, Goverment / Council buildings, Universities, Schools, Colleges, Housing, if you need a building protecting, we have the solution.

If you are not sure what you require, we are here to help. +44 (0) 1364 649248

Type 1 / Class I

The Type 1 SPD is recommended in the specific case of service-sector and industrial buildings, protected by a lightning protection system or a meshed cage.

It protects electrical installations against direct lightning strokes. It can discharge the back-current from lightning spreading from the earth conductor to the network conductors.

Type 1 SPD is characterized by a 10/350 µs current wave.

Type 2 / Class II

The Type 2 SPD is the main protection system for all low voltage electrical installations. Installed in each electrical switchboard, it prevents the spread of overvoltages in the electrical installations and protects the loads.

Type 2 SPD is characterized by an 8/20 µs current wave.

Type 3 / Class III

These SPDs have a low discharge capacity. They must therefore mandatorily be installed as a supplement to Type 2 SPD and in the vicinity of sensitive loads.

Type 3 SPD is characterized by a combination of voltage waves (1.2/50μs) & current waves (8/20μs).

Rail & Tram Transport Surge Protectors and Arresters

With the drive towards the expansion of the electrification of the rail networks, connection improvements, dedicated High Speed Lines, increase in rolling stock and the commitment to integrated transport systems, they have all added greater use to our modern rail systems.

The management of this is made easier with the advances in technologies in power distribution, signalling, control and data communications ect. With so much reliability on electronic technologies we must not forget the wide spread damage that comes with overvoltage power surges that we cannot see. The easiest to understand are those derived from lightning strikes as they can be seen.

With this said, in a typical storm more than 10,000 strikes will not be visible but each can contain enough voltage to cause damage to this sensitive equipment. The Railway and Tram systems today need surge protection for electrical equipment in the total infrastructure.

Here in South Brent, Devon, our offices, production and test facilities are actually built in what was the old train station. We have over the years offered many specialised products designed to address the protection requirements of both above and below ground trackside supply, infrastructure and signalling.

We have an extensive portfolio of Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 products providing over-voltage protection for all types of buildings and stations.

Some of our projects have included;

Network Rail - London Underground - Dutch Railways - Vancouver Monorail - Malaysian Monorail - Mexico City

Data & Telecom Surge Protection for Data Centers and Communications

With global communications networks continueing to grow year in year out, any electrical power problems could be extremely detrimental to any data-communications network.

A lightning strike or any type of power surge that lasts just one-millionth of a second can cause major damage, from power-related problems, downtime, or damaged equipment.... it could range from thousands to millions of pounds to rectify the issues caused.

Remember you have the ability to prevent this from happening!

It costs much less to avoid a disaster than to recover from one. To avoid these network disruptions from occuring it is good practice to create "zones" that lower any transient power in steps. This type of strategy provides the safest electrical environment for your sensitive electronic equipment.

LAN's - CCTV - Serial Interfaces - PABX - PSTN - Fax - Modems and LTE - WiMax Networks

These products are designed to provide protection as standalone modules, or in selective combination for full data and power line coverage.

Satellite & RF Surge Suppressors

Satellite cables and RF antenna coax cables are inputs from the satellite and TV aerial, from outside coming in to the building, to the television equipment. These coaxial cables are also sometimes used to connect a VCR, DVD player, satellite box or even games consoles to the television set.

All these devices can actually become at risk from surges entering the building via that coax cable from the satellite and TV aerial. Having a Type 3 (CLASS III) surge protected device (like a surge protected socket strip) on the inside of your building is protecting the items plugged in to that from surges coming from internal sources, but this does not stop an incoming surge coming in via the RF or satellite cable; so all those pieces of electrical equipment connected to the TV are interlinked via those cables, which could potentially be at risk.

We offer a range of products to protect your equipment from such damaging surges occuring to your equipment.

CCTV, Burglar & Fire Alarms Surge Protectors and Arresters

CCTV systems, Burglar Alarm systems and Fire Alarms are all designed to protect you, but how do you protect your systems?

Interestingly enough, many strange things often happen that affect security systems both indoors and especially outdoors; anything from interference noise on the CCTV image, to Alarms not working when tested or the whole system completely stopping and never to work again.

As homes, businesses, schools, hospitals etc. become filled with more electronic technology and gadgets, with smaller and more susceptible parts being used within them, the chances increase that some of your systems will be affected by surges, spikes and transient damage.

Any electrical equipment or device that is connected to your building's main electrical service panel is potentially at risk, and therefore should have some sort of protection. It is best practice to use a co-ordinated approach and install surge protection devices on the electrical service panel itself and also to any of your other equipment, including security system cameras, alarms, lighting, sockets, routers, coax cables, to name a few.

Your entire security system could be compromised without any surge protection installed. So ask yourself “Am I putting my valuable cutting edge technology at risk from surges and other energy phenomenon?"

For protection and peace of mind get surge protected today! After all, installing surge devices nearly always outweighs the expense of replacing damaged equipment.

Can you afford not to have it?

Electrical Power Distribution Surge Protection Devices Made in the UK

Electric power distribution is electricity power being carried from the transmission system to the consumers. This final stage of delivery of electric power distributes power through substations that connect to the transmission system and lower the transmission voltage to medium voltage ranging between 2 kV and 35 kV with the use of transformers.

Primary distribution lines carry this medium voltage power to distribution transformers located near the consumer premises. Distribution transformers again lower the voltage to the utilization voltage used by lighting, industrial equipment or household appliances. All of this equipment used in this process needs protection from surges.

Electrical Power Generation Surge Protection Devices Made in the UK

Electricity power generation is a process of generating electric power from sources of primary energy. The electricity is most often generated at a power plant by electromechanical generators, primarily driven by heat engines fuelled by combustion or nuclear fission, but also by other means such as the kinetic energy of flowing water and wind. Other energy sources include solar photovoltaics and geothermal power. The plant and machinery used to create this power are susceptible to damage caused by nearby lightning strikes and transient over-voltages caused by other sources. To protect such expensive damages being caused, it is good practice to make sure all such machinery is installed with SPD's (Surge Protection Devices).

We can offer bespoke products like our AZA series of MOV assemblies offering customised options for the overvoltage / surge protection of DC exciters and similar or allied systems. These devices are built to suit your desired application and give you a solution to all your surge issues.

A wide range of Continuous Operating Voltages and system energies can be accommodated in robust and compact assemblies and can be supplied as discrete units or configured on mounting plates for direct installation, thus saving you downtime, any unnecessary expense and hassle in your industry.

Contact us today with any surge problem, we believe that at PD Devices we have a product “For All Your Surge Solutions".

Renewable Energy - Photovoltaic / Solar, Wind Turbine and Hydro Electrical Plants Surge Protection

The renewable energy industry is made up from many different kinds of sources, from primarily using sun for solar (photovoltaic) energy, wind (wind turbines) and water (hydro electrical plants).

These facilities are all used today to convert these natural free energy sources into electricity for our consumption, and provide the exact same product as the fossil fuel industry but without all the dirty emissions that are dispersed into the atmosphere which affects the air we breathe and the environment we live in.

Unfortunately it is far more expensive to produce power from using these FREE renewable energy sources than the burning of fossil fuels. The reasons behind all of this is the shear cost based on the equipment that is necessary to harness natural sources and convert them to electricity and the maintenance or replacement of this equipment.

The main and overall problem with regards to reducing any of the costs within the renewable sectors is the same thing we are using in the first place ....nature.

The damage that lightning strikes can cause to windfarms, solar panels, hydro plants and all the equipment used within them that are connected is very costly. This cost can be prevented by the implementation of our surge protection devices (SPDs).

Ministry of Defence - Electro Magnetic Pulse Protection Modules

We manufacture a wide range of products to protect against the effects of high altitude detonation of Nuclear devices. The result of such an event is the generation of Electromagnetic Pulses which will induce a high voltage transient in exposed conductors.

The EMP can affect several thousands of square kilometres, with a magnitude of tens of kilovolts. This could result in serious damage to insulation, cause breakdown of semiconductors and the consequent malfunction of critical equipment. Most notable would be the failure of Energy Power Supply and Communications Systems.

Surge and Lightning Protection Devices available for a number of sectors

Building and Construction, Rail and Tram Transport, Data Networks and Telecoms, Ministry of Defence, Renewable Energy, Electrical Power Generation, Electrical Power Distribution, Home and Office, CCTV, Fire and Burglar Alarms

We are Fit For Nuclear - Nuclear Surge Protection Devices

We're proud to announce that PD Devices has successfully completed its F4N journey for a second time and we have been re-granted Fit For Nuclear F4N accreditation by NAMRC.

So, what exactly is the Fit For Nuclear programme?

Fit For Nuclear (F4N) is a unique service to help UK manufacturing companies get ready to bid for work in the nuclear supply chain. F4N lets companies measure their operations against the standards required to supply the nuclear industry.

The program takes an in-depth look at the following areas within the organisation, Strategy and Leadership, Design and Project Management, People Excellence, Process Excellence, Health and Safety Culture and Quality Management and helps companies to develop a clear and focussed action plan to sustain, and continually seek to improve their processes to meet the high standards required by the nuclear industry.

We at PD Devices, have always been committed to a ‘Safety First' culture, we are passionate about employee engagement and about achieving the very highest standards in design and manufacturing quality. We embrace the importance of making continuous improvements throughout our business. It is therefore very satisfying to have our efforts recognised by Nuclear AMRC with its backing from industry leaders and government.

Network Rail Approved Products - Rail Signalling Surge Protection Devices

There is currently major investment in upgrading and development of the Rail systems throughout the UK. This investment includes the introduction of a new generation of Solid State Interlocking (SSI) systems. With more processing capacity in a much reduced size, resulting in the SSI being more susceptible to over voltage transients, which are ideally protected by our Surge Protection Devices.

With the ever increasing demand for safety and reliability of the electrical and electronic systems there are further important and new applications for Surge and Lightning Protection Products such as our Network Rail Approved RTM Series which offer Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) or Silicon Avalanche Diode (SAD) technologies.

New Surge and Lightning Protection Devices have been designed in support of NR/L2/ELP/27410. This will provide safe isolation and distribution of circuits to Network Rail's Class II based signalling power distribution systems. These Devices are currently being ‘rolled out' by various PD Devices Rail customers.

Some of our other developments include those with Network Rail for a new generation of Surge and Lightning Arrestors. The now PADS approved DSP1A/SSI/120 and the DSP1A-SSI-140 are single phase devices with MOV & SAD component technology. These will reduce the failure rate of Trackside Functional Modules (TFM) during lightning storms and other events, thus improving the SSI performance and prolonging the service life of the protected equipment.

A NEW CRTM150/650 compact version of our popular RTM150-650 surge protection device is now available, this provides the same protection to equipment connected to AC power supplies as with our RTM150-650 but in a compact smaller casing, to fit those tighter areas.

Testimonials

Products: T1SP3/12.5/50/230R / A1SPM/40/230N / T1SP3/12.5/50R / A3SPM/40/230N - Surge / Lightning protection was required for our panel building workshop by the customer / end users. In my 10 years, I have only ever heard of problems with 2 units and therefore performance must be above average. My only thing I would like to add is maybe a larger stock of product would help with supply times. I rated this company for it products and overall service 5 stars out of 5 and a 4 out of for its overall service.

Cormac McKibbin, Greenville

I purchased a Varistor Z500PSN/L specified by a customer, PD Devices were an existing supplier. Always found PD Devices responsive & helpful, deliveries on time & in full. I rated this company for it products and overall service 5 stars out of 5 for both.
