DAVE DOBSON

Dave Dobson spent 30 years with North Yorkshire Police and was trained to drive at an advanced level for cars and motorcycles. This qualification is respected as one of the best in the world for advanced driving and riding. Dave also undertook additional training in VIP escorting, trailer towing, minibus driving and covert surveillance driving/riding techniques.

Whilst in the Force he spent many years in the Road Policing Department dealing with inconsiderate drivers and investigating serious and fatal road collisions. His work also involved him in driver education for schools and other organisations.

Dave's passion for safer driving led to his involvement with the Institute of Advanced Motorists. He was involved in the formation of the Harrogate Group in April 1983 and became an examiner for the organisation in 1987. Today he still examines drivers and riders for cars, motorcycles, minibuses and towing, in the North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire areas. He is also an IAM registered driving instructor.

Dave has ridden motorcycles for over 25 years. He spent many years on Police motorcycle patrol duties and later covert motorcycle operations. He was involved in the organisation and running of the Motorcycle Marshal Team for the Milk Race for a number of years. The valuable skills and experience Dave gained over the years has not been wasted. He is actively involved in promoting safer riding as part of the North Yorkshire Police Bikesafe Team and assists another local motorcycle trainer.

This passion for safer driving and riding was one reason why Dave decided to become a DSA Approved Driving Instructor. He was successful in all his examinations first time. He is also a DSA registered fleet driver trainer. Dave believes that he has a great deal of knowledge and experience in advanced driving techniques and road safety issues which he can share with you. These skills ensure that you can have fun when driving or riding safely and allow you to gel with your vehicle to obtain the most from your driving or riding.

ADVANCED DRIVING

All our advanced driving courses are based on the police advanced driving system Roadcraft.

Lots of us have driven for many years and have covered thousands of miles, but how many of you still use the basic skills gained during your ‘L’ test? There have been many advances in vehicle and road technology. Now is your chance to bring your driving skills uptwospeed with these changes.

Each session commences with an assessment of your current knowledge and skills. This ensures no time is wasted covering things you know: knowledge of the forces acting on a vehicle during acceleration, braking and cornering are essential to advanced driving. We will check your understanding of these and how you control your vehicle on the open road in changing road, traffic and weather conditions.

The key to all driving is observations. This is one area where most improvement is gained during these sessions. We will extend your observations further than you ever thought and build a complete picture of the risks and dangers which are not only visible but which you should also anticipate.

You will learn skills to assess every bend accurately. This will allow you to maintain safe progress, increase the stability of your vehicle on the road and make your cornering safer whilst having fun.

Learn about the different types of overtakes. Develop new overtaking skills which ensure that you are always in the right place, travelling at the right speed and the correct gear selected to overtake quickly and safely. You should never miss the opportunity to overtake again.

For those of you who drive a vehicle fitted with an automatic gearbox, we will teach you that it is not appropriate to select D (drive) for all road and traffic conditions. Learn about your automatic transmission and how you can use the gearbox to improve the control of your vehicle. This will also improve your stability and can improve your maintenance and fuel costs.

Throughout these sessions the emphasis is on safety and Defensive Driving skills. You will develop positioning for safety, stability and observations. At all times you will increase the ‘Safety Bubble’ around your vehicle. This will give you time to react to the risks and dangers presented by other road users. Actively assess these risks and manage them safely with your space and speed. Don’t under estimate the risks from other road users; the normal level of attention for average drivers is only 20%.

Our advanced driving sessions are designed not only to improve your vehicle control but to assist you in bringing your skills uptwospeed and in tune with current road and vehicle technology. Develop new skills whilst having fun and be one step ahead of those who present danger and conflict to you on the roads.

ADVANCED MOTORCYCLE TRAINING

A motorcycle is the ideal way to explore the open road. North Yorkshire hosts some of the best biking roads in the country; unfortunately too many riders never live long enough to fulfil their dreams, these roads claiming their lives.

Having spent many years investigating these collisions one pattern emerged. It was not a road defect or machine fault which led to these serious injuries or death but the actions of the rider. Lots of these collisions were avoidable.

At UPTWOSPEED our aim is to make you aware of how your machine reacts to your input. How you maintain stability during all types of road and weather conditions, whilst making lawful progress and having fun.


Safety is paramount and a great deal of importance is placed on defensive riding skills, taking into account contingency plans and escape routes, to prepare you for that unknown event. These skills may one day save your life. Our riding sessions are not patronising. You will ride your own machine, the one you love and treasure.

Motorcycle Courses

Each session is based on your individual needs allowing you to gel with your machine, focusing on safety, stability and observations whilst maintaining progress. By the end of your time with Uptwospeed you will have more knowledge about the stability of your bike on the road and how you can upset this. You will have developed new skills in advanced observation and anticipation which improves your safety on the road. You will have also developed cornering and overtaking skills which will allow you to maintain progress when others are slowed by these hazards.
