Making Redundancies Re structuring Cutting your Workforces

With approaching 2m unemployed, and rising, these are difficult times for many. In particular those who have to cope with the shock of loosing their job. Running a recruitment company is not exactly an expanding sector to be in, especially when ‘downsizing', ‘restructuring' and making redundancies are becoming very familiar words. But we do have a real interest in getting people back into work and importantly in helping them be prepared for approaching a hardening job market. Among the first reactions from those who have lost, or who fear they may lose their job is ‘What on earth do I do now?' The question ‘Where do I start?' follows quickly, usually coupled with an overwhelming feeling of isolation. Getting a new role as quickly as possible needs a planned campaign which is individually focused. One of the things that employers can do to help and support their staff at this crucial time is to ensure they are able to offer effective, quality independent outplacement advice and encouragement which will focus on the needs of the individuals. The aim being to make available practical advice, support, counselling and direction which will help people get themselves back into the job market. YOU Recruitment has found a marked increase in businesses and organisations showing a keen interest in these services, particularly in recent weeks. We have also been approached by individuals seeking one to one advice and counselling to help them find a wider perspective in their search for a new job or career. If a person has not needed to look for a job for a while, approaching the job market with a planned campaign and with proper preparation is key. Exploring options at this time is vital and often inspiring. Redundancy is also an opportunity to take a long hard look at what a person may want from the career, their job and their work-life balance. It can even lead some into making the first steps into an independent career path or business opportunity. The feeling of isolation can be quickly overcome by helping people understand how to identify and lever the network of contacts they have who may lead them on to a successful path to find a new role. A correctly structured CV, in a variety of forms is important, as is being confident in approaching the interview process and understanding the different forms an interview can take. Responding effectively to job advertisements and being sure the individuals application stands out from the rest is a skill that is taught rather than one which comes naturally to many. All of this, and more, can come from taking advantage of a structured outplacement programme. Helping people know where and how to look in the job markets, deciding what options they may have, and maybe even what they want to do next in their career, can be a very positive first step into an unkown future. Regard redundancy as use a trampoline - jump on it hard and you'll be surprised how high you can go.John WestDirectorYOU Recruitment

Recruiting in Tough Times

The old adage is true - "when the going gets tough, the tough get going!" It couldn't be truer now than ever what with the credit crunch, a falling housing market, rising food and energy prices, and dare we say it the ‘R' word being spoken of in hushed terms, most businesses are preparing for a difficult time ahead. There are increasing signs that the way in which many companies are going about their recruitment is changing. A greater demand for more precise and targeted recruitment, which accurately finds those key people to fill essential positions, is putting recruitment professionals under pressure. Additionally, recruitment managers and HR departments often find the process of finding good people very time consuming and long winded, particularly when dealing with responses to advertisements, sifting through applications and CVs, screening and initial interviewing - all this even before presenting candidates to line managers for interview. We spoke to independent recruitment consultancy ‘YOU Recruitment' which operates specifically on a search and selection basis, aiming to present to its clients only candidates who have gone through a thorough process of selection screening. Managing Director John West told us ‘The pressures that exist in today's modern businesses mean that they are more and more looking to outside resource providers for professional services that are bespoke, specific and understanding of their business and its needs. Investing in the right people is key, and therefore the way in which those individuals are sourced is equally as important. Time after time it has been shown that correctly qualified people with the right experience and who fit the culture of the business, are the people who deliver, add value and stay.' ‘When we receive a call from a client our first priority is to seek a meeting to find out about the business, its aims, culture and how the role they want to fill fits into the structure. Importantly we need to understand what the successful applicant is expected to deliver, and we always ask for a Job Description as well as a person spec. All of this is vital when we initially speak to candidates - we are, after all, the first people any candidate will speak to about the job and we need to talk knowledgably about the company and the role; we are the ambassadors for the business. Working only on a search and selection basis means that our relationship with candidates is as important as the one with our clients. Assessing their suitability, relevant experience, personality fit and qualifications comes through screening and interviewing. All our clients receive CVs prefaced by consultant's notes, and every candidate will have been met by a member of the YOU Recruitment team.' We asked if all of this meant untimely delays in getting applicants details to clients. West's response was straightforward, ‘We aim to deliver quality, not volume. In the end we may only put forward a fraction of the number of candidates we have found and considered for any one role, but they will offer the very best fit available to the criteria set down by the client. In turn this saves time and effort on the clients part and inevitably means their decision making can be made faster. They can also have the confidence that they are seeing the best candidates available in the market.' He added, ‘It's tough out there for businesses and they need to be sure that the people they take on are right. Downtime in key roles costs money, the wrong person in a job costs more money and recruiting, in whatever ways it's done isn't cheap. A productive relationship developed with a recruitment company can go on paying dividends for a long time - who knows, eventually the client may never need to recruit again as all their well sourced people just stay and go on delivering!'
